The reader’s research desk

Build a precious-metals research notebook

Separate a source, a claim and an unanswered question before comparing anything.

Keep research separate from a decision

A useful research notebook begins before a buying decision. Write down the question you are investigating, the date, and the terms you do not yet understand. The aim of this exercise is to organize information, not decide whether a particular asset belongs in your financial plans.

Use one page for each source. Record the author or organization, publication date, link and the specific statement you are examining. If the page is a sales page, record that context too. A seller's description and an independent explanation serve different purposes even when both contain useful information.

Use three columns

Label the columns claim, evidence and unresolved question. In the first, paraphrase the statement accurately. In the second, note the document or data that could support it. In the third, write what you would need to check before relying on it.

An attractive chart can generate several different questions. What dates does it cover? What unit is on the vertical axis? Is the comparison using the same currency and time period? Record these as questions rather than quietly filling in assumptions. If the underlying data is unavailable, leave the evidence field incomplete.

Make the uncertainty visible

At the end of a session, mark each note as checked, partly checked or not checked. Add a sentence explaining the label. This is a personal research aid, not a rating of an investment or a guarantee that a source is correct.

The Practical Gold reading pages and free comparison starter can give the notebook a structure. For a consequential financial decision, obtain current information and advice suited to your circumstances. Neither this exercise nor the books' presence in the catalog establishes a recommendation to buy, sell or allocate money.
